Milk
Container Collection Program
In late 2006, the
British Columbia Dairy Council (BCDC) rolled
out the first stage of its voluntary milk container recycling
program in BC’s Lower Mainland. By the end of 2007 the program was
available in all parts of the province and by the end of March 2008
there were over 120 Encorp depots accepting milk containers for
recycling.
This new program is designed to supplement existing curbside
recycling programs for milk jugs which already give BC one of the
highest recycling rates in North America for this type of container.
In 2007 this combination was able to recover and recycle over 76% of
milk jugs by weight. The depot program also accepts polycoat milk
cartons and, in its roll out year, recovered and recycled 2.2% of
these cartons. Early results for 2008 indicate that this rate is
rising quickly as new depots, and more consumer awareness, take
effect.
The program is operated for the BC Dairy Council by Encorp Pacific
(Canada), the largest private sector product stewardship agency in
B.C. Further information on the milk container recycling program,
including depot locations, can be found on the Encorp website at
www.encorp.ca. |
