Collection Only Option for Milk Containers
The collection only option provides Recycling Authorities (RAs) in remote rural communities with the opportunity to collect milk containers in a common manner and have them picked up and transported to market by a third party under contract to the Alberta Dairy Council. RAs who choose this option forego top-up funding in favor of no-fee pickup and transportation services.
The intent of the Collection Only Option is to facilitate the provision of collection services in areas where handling and shipping costs exceed the value of top-up payments and transportation supplements. Recycling Authorities' primary means of participation will be by collecting the milk jugs, thus requiring no capital or equipment investment.
Under the Collection Only Option, the ADC supplies participating RAs with a metal rack constructed of square tubing and re-useable poly bags. The RA is responsible for setting up the 'rack and bag' and removing and storing full bags of material prior to pick-up. Full bags of milk containers will be collected in accordance with a coordinated scheduled pick up. The RA is also expected to ensure there is minimal contamination in the bags of collected milk containers.
If more than one site is located within a Registered Authority area, full bags from remotely located sites should be consolidated at one convenient location for pick-up.
In summary, to participate in the 'Collection Only Option', municipalities or Recycling Authorities must:
- Register with the Alberta Dairy Council Milk Container Recycling Program for the 'Collection Only Option'
- Set up the 'rack and bag' for collection of empty milk containers
- Store the full bags of empty containers for pick-up by a third party carrier under contract to Alberta Dairy Council
- Consolidate full bags of empty jugs from remotely located sites in one convenient location for pick-up
- Work with Alberta Dairy Council in developing an acceptable pick-up schedule.
